We are an independent Community Pharmacy attached to a busy GP surgery near the centre of Mansfield Nottinghamshire.

This is a busy 100 hour pharmacy employing one full time superintendent pharmacist and one full time and one part-time pharmacist.  We have 14 other full time and part-time members of staff, including a full-time ACT, a trainee technician, 8 dispensers and several counter assistants.  We average 24-25K items per month and supply nursing homes and offer a delivery service.

Our team is small and friendly and very supportive, independence allows us scope to develop a good atmosphere in which to learn and progress. This will also allow us to give flexibility to encourage the right candidate.

We are offering a 33 hour per week average contract; working hours are on a 2 week rota to include evening and weekend work.  Competitive salary offered. We are able to sponsor a Tier 2 visa candidate. Mansfield is a medium sized old market town with reasonably priced accommodation and good public transport links to Nottingham and other major towns/cities.

Job description

Reports to; Superintendent Pharmacist and in their absence Manager Teresa Smith 

Main purpose of the role:

The pharmacist will carry out day to day activities connected with the preparation and supply of medicines and will provide advice to patients on the use of medicines as well as on general health and lifestyle matters. The job holder will be participate in the supervision and training of other pharmacy staff and will undertake activities that support the strategic objectives to maximise the profit and potential of the business, under the supervision and guidance of the superintendent pharmacist.

Primary responsibilities:

  • To abide by the GPhC code of ethics, observing and applying all professional, ethical and legal obligations;
  • To implement and adopt standard operating procedures, to ensure procedures are in place for the avoidance of risk;
  • To dispense prescription medicines to patients, checking dosage and ensuring that medicines are correctly and safely labeled and supplied;
  • To supervise the safe preparation of any medicines;
  • To ensure that all dispensing errors and near misses are logged in accordance with the company’s procedures and to undertake any activity necessary to rectify or prevent errors;
  • To keep and maintain a register of controlled drugs for legal purposes;
  • To liaise with doctors about prescriptions to ensure accuracy and prevent risk;
  • To counsel and advise patients on the treatment of minor ailments and any adverse side-effects of medicines or potential interactions with other medicines/treatments to ensure safe use;
  • To prepare monitored dosage and cassette box systems for the benefit patients;
  • To oversee the ordering and storage of medical products to ensure safety and reduce waste;
  • To arrange the delivery of prescription medicines to patients who are unable to attend the pharmacy;
  • To keep up-to-date with current pharmacy practice, new drugs and their uses for the purpose of continuing professional development;
  • To maintain computerised records in accordance with data protection principles to ensure patient confidentiality;
  • To ensure that all present and future NHS contractual obligations in respect of essential service are adhered to;
  • To ensure that all present and future NHS contractual obligations with regard to essential services are adhered to, including waste management, self-care, signposting, public health and repeat dispensing.
  • To participate in training and supervision of support staff to attain optimum performance.
  • To work with the superintendent in scheduling labour effectively and direct and delegate to aid effective functioning as a team.
  • To work with the superintendent and management team to keep to our budgeting and financial management policies.

Person specification

  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain;
  • Ability to motivate team and develop team skills
  • Develop supervisory experience working with the superintendent pharmacist
  • Ability to work effectively to deadlines;
  • Ensure the effective use and control of resources;
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and training;
  • Willingness to utilise pharmacy skills and knowledge to develop services to meet the needs of the community
  • Demonstrate ability to build and maintain relationships with the wider health care team.
  • Strong communication skills with a professional, tactful and friendly attitude;
  • IT literate.
